Stonefold Holiday Cottage, Newton-in-BowlandYou can be sure of a warm welcome at Stonefold Holiday Cottage. This 300 years old barn/shippon has recently been renovated to a very high standard. Situated in a wonderful rural location in the Forest of Bowland an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With spectacular panoramic views of the Hodder Valley and the Three Peaks it is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the surrounding countryside. The cottage which sleeps 5 + cot has many features including flagged floors and beamed ceilings and is equipped to a very high standard. The ground floor has a living/kitchen/dining room a twin bedroom and shower/wet room all on one level, which makes the cottage suitable for disabled guests. The first floor has a large double bedroom with an en-suite with shower and there is also a cosy single bedroom. Sit and enjoy the view from the patio and garden where outdoor furniture is provided, there is also ample car parking. It is an ideal base for walking, bird watching and mountain biking. There are many interesting places to visit in the Hodder Valley such as the Bowland Wild Boar Park, and the pretty villages of Dunsop Bridge where you can feed the ducks at the village stream and Newton where footpaths run alongside the River Hodder, the award winning Inn at Whitewell is worth a visit as are many of the village pubs which are well known for their good food and hospitability. A drive through the stunning Trough of Bowland to Lancaster is a must, it has a large castle and historic buildings and a good range of shops, at Williamson Park you will find the Butterfly House where you walk amongst exotic butterflies, and during the summer outdoor theatre performances are held in the Park. The scenic village of Waddington (6 miles) offers visitors a taste of village life, with its quiet stream running through beautiful gardens and where you can enjoy home cooked food from the village café or sit and relax outside one of the pubs. Every year the village holds a Scarecrow Festival and duck race which attracts many visitors. The quaint village of Downham nestles beneath the majestic Pendle Hill and offers the visitor a glimpse of times past as no television aerials, satellite dishes or overhead cables are allowed. The village has a great café/shop and a good pub the 'Assheton Arms' named after the Assheton family who own the village. The television series 'Born and Bred ' was recently filmed here. Downham is a good start to take the Pendle Witch Trail this takes you around many of the villages surrounding Pendle Hill. The vibrant market town of Clitheroe (8 miles) is dominated by its Norman Castle the town boasts many award winning shops such as Cowmans Famous Sausage Shop and Byrnes Wine Merchants, there is also a local indoor swimming Pool (Ribblesdale Pool), Roefield Leisure Centre and a cinema. The Castle Museum is also worth a visit. Trains run hourly from Clitheroe station to Manchester city centre and during the summer months a steam train (Dales Rail) runs as far as Carlisle, a very scenic route that takes you over the spectacular Ribble Head Viaduct. There are so many interesting places to visit and things to do in the area with lots of events held during the year we are sure you will enjoy your stay. |
